He was educated under the tutorship of John Kelley, of Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, and at Duff's College, Pittsburgh. From early life he was involved in steamboating, and was a pilot for over twenty years.
He was a member of the R. A., of the A. O. U. W., and of the Presbyterian Church. He was a Republican.
