General Notes: Husband - Daniel Reeves
He was apprenticed to learn the carpenter's trade at Mount Holly, New Jersey, his master being Billy Atkins. Not liking the apprenticeship at which he was put to work at home, he ran away to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the age of nineteen, and worked there as a carpenter and cabinet-maker. There he met Henry Sims, who had known both Mr. Reeves and Mr. Atkins east of the Allegheny Mountains. Mr. Sims promised not to reveal Daniel Reeves' whereabouts to Mr. Atkins if the young man would work for him in Beaver County; it was agreed. In this way, Daniel Reeves moved to New Brighton, now Beaver Falls, where he settled and worked for a time in the shop of Mr. Sims on the bank of the Beaver River. At twenty-two he married and established himself in business independently. He assisted in building the first court house in the county in the town of Beaver. He received for his work wages of sixty-two and a half cents a day, walking to and from his work eight miles. He erected a large number of houses and barns in Beaver County.
The family was of the Episcopalian faith.
Daniel Reeves enlisted for service in the War of 1812 and was about to leave for the front when his daughter, Jane, becoming seriously ill, was said to be on her deathbed. One of his employees, Benoni Wilkinson, offered to go to war in his stead, and Mr. Reeves accepted the offer.
He and his wife had four sons and three daughters.
He died by drowning in the Beaver River.
General Notes: Wife - Margaret Steen
From Washington County, Pennsylvania, she came to Beaver County with her parents in 1804.
She was the recipient of an excellent education, having been graduated from Jefferson College, could read Latin, Hebrew and Greek with ease, and would frequently quote from the Catechism. She was by far the best educated woman in the valley in her day. She was a Seceder in religious faith, very strict in the observance of her religion, and so well informed on theological matters that she was able to overcome in argument the preachers who frequently came to discuss religious affairs with her, and obtain the benefit of her profound studies.
