From the north of Ireland he came to America with his brother Thomas, in 1720, and was an early settler in Paxtang, Lancaster County (then Conestoga township, Chester County), Pennsylvania.

For many years he was Recorder for Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.

He died in Paxtang, in his will is designated "of Fishing Creek."
