The Barrys are of Norman descent, and in Ireland rose to great wealth and prominence, intermarrying with the nobility of the kingdom. Richard Barry became a Friend under the preaching of William Penn, and, being disowned by his family, came to America. His people were attached to the Roman Catholic Church.

From Ballo, County Cork, Ireland, he settled Radnor, Chester (later Delaware) County, Pennsylvania.
