He attended the common schools of Brady township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, until the age of fifteen, when he entered the normal school at Curwensville, and there spent two terms. In 1878 he began a course in the State Normal School at Lock Haven, where he was graduated with honors. He then began the study of law with Frank Fielding, of Clearfield, and four years later was admitted to the Bar, and entered upon the practice of his profession at Du Bois.
