He was born on the old family homestead in Cranberry township, Butler County, PA, received a good common school education, and graduated at Duff's Commer­cial College. He studied medicine and graduated from the Medical Department of the Western University in the spring of 1894, and began practicing his pro­fession in Pittsburgh.
