This family, seated in county Armagh, Ireland, for many generations, were farmers and Protestants.

He was born in county Armagh, Ireland, and came with his family to the United States, settled at North Liberty, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where he cleared and cultivated a farm until his death. His wife and children were all born in county Armagh, she dying at the North Liberty farm. Both parents were members of the United Presbyterian church.
