He was reared in Rochester, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, attended school there, also attended the Bucknell University, Pennsylvania, a Baptist Institution, where he graduated in the regular literary course in 1873, and the same year commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Clark, at Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. In 1874 he entered the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia, remaining in that college and the hospitals of that city until 1876, obtaining a thorough preparation for practice. Beginning in 1876 he engaged in practice in Rochester. In politics he was a Republican. He was a member of the Medical Society of Beaver County, and served as borough physician one term. He was a member of the Baptist church.

He was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, and was a member of the staff of the Beaver Valley General Hospital; he was also a lecturer in the Training School for Nurses.
