He graduated from Allegheny College in 1888, and received his M. D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1895.
He was a wide traveller. He first went to Europe in 1889, just after his graduation from college, and lived to circle the world three times. He was in active practice for about 25 years in Oil City, Pennsylvania, but then retired to devote more time to travelling. He was a member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church of Oil City.
