He was a farmer by occupation. When he went to housekeeping after his marriage, he did so with only five dollars' worth of furniture. For ten years he worked the first farm he was on, on shares, his to be one-third. The next fourteen years he worked on a one-half interest basis and at the end of the twenty-four years, in 1865, he purchased a farm of his own from Mr. Colin M. Reed and continued on it for eighteen years, at the end of which time\emdash in 1883\emdash he owned a fine farm of four hundred acres, well improved with a substantial brick house, and well built buildings, and all necessary improvement and conveniences on it, unincumbered with any debt. After forty-two years of farming, he bought a house on Chestnut street in Washington. Leaving the farm to the management of two of his sons, he moved into town and passed the remaining years of his life in comfortable ease.
