Having been educated at West Point, he entered the cavalry service, and was first employed as a lieutenant during the Indian hostilities in the west. He subsequently became a captain in the commissary department. After the breaking out of the Rebellion he was appointed assistant commissary-general of the Army of the Potomac, under McClellan. Gen. Thomas, on being promoted to the command of the Army of the Southwest, solicited his appointment as commissary-general in that army, which was accordingly made.
