He and his cousin, John R. Bear, began business at Spring Mills, Pennsylvania, and he remained there until 1852, when he sold out and moved to Pittsburgh. There he was engaged in the lumber business until 1857, but he later removed to Elwood, Kansas, where he began in the retail business. In 1873 he became a partner in a wholesale grocery house of that city.
He was Captain of Company B, of the 9th regiment of Kansas Volunteers, during the Civil War.
He was a Republican in politics. He was one of the first County Commissioners of Doniphan County, Kansas, in which capacity he served three terms. In 1860 he was elected Mayor of the city of Elwood, then a larger city than St. Joseph. In the autumn of 1886, he moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he later died.
, in his 78th year, honored and respected by all who knew him.

1. Guy C. Barr, born June 2nd, 1869. He graduated from the law department of the Missouri University in June, 1893, and became a prominent attorney of St. Joseph, Missouri. He married Mary Henderson, July 1st, 1897. They had one child, George C. Barr, born February 22nd, 1903.
