He was born about two miles north of Greensburg, in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He attended "Cope" public school until about fifteen years of age, after which he was employed on his father's farm until 1868. In that year he went to Irwin and secured employment in the Westmoreland County Coal Works, remaining there until April, 1873, when he went to Denver, Colorado, prospecting in "San Jose Country," three hundred and fifty miles south of Denver, but finally his health became seriously impaired and, not having met with much financial success, he returned to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1880. The following year he went to the Clearfield lumbering district, and was a contractor for bark peeling, felling, etc., until 1887. He then returned to Irwin and worked for his brother, Alexander Hoffman Pool, in the butchering business until 1888, when he came to Jeannette and purchased property on the main street, Clay avenue, and there opened a pool and billiard parlor. January 1, 1891, his place was utterly destroyed by fire. He then went to Braddock and was associated with Charles Allum of that place in the same business until 1895, when he returned to Jeannette and rebuilt and reopened his pool and billiard parlor, November 27, 1895. He adhered to the tenets of the Lutheran church. He was a member of I. O. O. F. Lodge No. 701; also of the A. M. C. C. Lodge No. 300.
