He and his wife came from families identified with the early and successful lumbering and agricultural development of the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania.

He married and they moved [from Lycoming County?] to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1867 and settled on a farm near Watsontown, where they lived until 1879, when they moved into Watsontown.
