He was a native of Ireland, who first settled in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and in or about 1792 purchased a farm near Elizabeth, Allegheny County, where he lived until his death, by accident. He left three daughters and three sons.

He was killed while felling a tree on the place later owned by his grandson, Samuel G. He built the first courthouse at Greensburg.
