General Notes: Husband - James A. Stewart
He was born in Cross Creek township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he received his early education in the subscription schools. This was afterward improved by a course at Wotring's Academy. He then successfully followed the profession of a school teacher for thirteen years, when he began the study of medicine under Dr. Hamilton, of West Middletown, but was compelled to abandon it, owing to failing health.
He remained in Jefferson township seventeen years after his marriage, and in 1873 came to Independence township and purchased the "Thomas White" farm, lying about two miles northeast of Independence. In politics he was a Democrat, and in religious connection both he and his wife were members of the Bethel M. P. Church.
