He attended the common schools of his native township. Leaving school he engaged in farming which he pursued for years in East Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, and then removed to Mt. Pleasant township where he purchased a farm of one hundred and thirty-five acres of land. In addition to farming he took considerable interest in raising fine stock. He was a republican on national issues but acted independently when it came to local politics. For township officers he always voted for the man whom he thought best fitted for the position.
In religion he was a German Baptist and he and his wife were members of the Mt. Joy church of that religious denomination.
