He was reared in Kittanning township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the common schools. At twenty years of age he became interested in the art of photography, which he learned and then followed successfully. For a while he was in partnership with C. C. Shadle, an old and experienced photographer of Kittanning; but later he rented large and convenient rooms in the Orr building, which he furnished with all the latest and improved photographic apparatus.
In politics he was a republican. He was a member of the Equitable Aid Association and St. Luke's Reformed church.
