He was educated in the public schools and the Clarion State Normal School, and in 1896 taught printing in an industrial school at Norfolk, Virginia, afterward becoming foreman of the mechanical department of the Butler Eagle, Butler, Pennsylvania. At the end of a year he entered his father's office at Clarion, Pennsylvania. He was a Democrat and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of the Maccabees.
