General Notes: Husband - Nathaniel Aukerman Barnhart
He obtained his educational training in the Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1895. He fitted himself for the profession of civil and mining engineer, and for three years was associated with the Loyalhanna Coal and Coke Company of Latrobe as assistant mining engineer, going from there to West Virginia, where he was engaged for a year doing railroad work. He then returned to Pennsylvania, establishing himself with the Hostetter Connellsville Coke Company of Whiting as mining engineer, and was for three years so engaged. During his first three years service with this company he erected a reservoir for an independent water supply and rebuilt the works in general. In June, 1903, he received the appointment to chief engineer and mine superintendent.
In matters of politics Mr. Barnhart was a strong advocate of the principles of the Republican party, but never aspired to public office. He was a member of the Masonic order, and a regular and consistent attendant of the Reformed church.
