He was born in Manchester, England, and came to America at ten years of age with his mother and step-father, his own father having died when he was a comparatively small boy. When he grew up he learned the machinist's trade, and later in life was associated in business with his step-father. He was both a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the I. O. O. F.
He and his wife were the parents of twelve children; four were still living in 1897.
