He took the ordinary course of instruction in the public schools, and completed his school education in the Harrisburg Academy, under Prof. Jacob Seiler. His academic course ended, he went into the mill with his father, who carefully instructed him in all branches of the milling business, which he made his occupation for many years. He was identified with the Republican party. His fraternity association was with the Knights of Malta. He and his family were members of the Paxtang Presbyterian church.
