General Notes: Husband - George Shupe Barnhart
He was born on a farm adjacent to that which he himself later. He passed his childhood and early life amid scenes of rural simplicity and the wholesome environment of farm life. His birthplace had been the home of his great-grandfather, his grandfather and his father before him, and was one of the most charming old places near Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The farm upon which he resided was purchased by his father in the year 1871, and was originally the old Rumbaugh homestead. It consisted of one hundred and thirty-seven acres, and was located about two miles northeast of the Greensburg Court House. He lived with his parents until the year 1889, when he was married, and he then took possession of the neighboring farm, where he began to carry on farming. In the year 1905 he erected a commodious and handsome modern brick dwelling, and also a massive barn, erected in 1884, and all the appropriate outbuildings for the carrying on of a large farming establishment. At one point he purchased his father's farm of one hundred and sixteen acres, so that his property amounted to two hundred and fifty-three acres in all.
He was a member of the school board beginning in the year 1911, and devoted his
energies to providing the best possible schools for Hempfield township. He was one of those who organized the Farm Bureau in Westmoreland County, and he was chosen first president of the organization.
