General Notes: Husband - Frank D. Barnhart
He obtained his early education in the common schools of Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and later attended the Mount Pleasant Institute, from which he was graduated in 1884. He then resided on the old homestead farm. He held the office of school director for six years. He was president of the Westmoreland Agricultural Society, an office. He was one of the organizers of the Jeannette, West Newton and Monogheny Electric Railroad Company. He was a director in the Farmers' and Merchants' National Bank of Mount Pleasant, a director and vice-president of the Mount Pleasant Tool Company, secretary of the Mount Pleasant Creamery Company and director of the Citizens' Building and Loan Association of Mount Pleasant. He held membership in the R. A., No. 592, of Mount Pleasant, in which he passed all the chairs; and also in the W. of A., in which he also passed all the chairs. In religious faith he affiliated with the Reformed church of Mount Pleasant, and was a deacon in same after his father's death.
He was born on the old Barnhart homestead, which was situated about one mile east of Mount Pleasant in Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and spent his life on this place. His early education was obtained in the public schools of Mount Pleasant township, and he later attended the Mount Pleasant Institute and graduated therefrom with the class of 1884. He became the owner of his own farm which had belonged to his grandfather, David Barnhart, in early days, when only twenty-one years of age. The land proved to be rich in coal, and Mr. Barnhart himself operated a mine under the property from which the coal was taken and sold to the Frick Company.
He was one of the organizers of the Jeannette, West Newton & Monogheny Electric Railroad Company. He served the community as a member of the school board, and was president of this body for three years, during which time a new High School was built.
Mr. Barnhart was a member of the Royal Arcanum Society, No. 592, of Mount Pleasant, and of the local lodge of the Woodmen of America, and passed all the chairs in both of these organizations. In his religious belief he was, like his father and grandfather before him, a member of the Reformed church of Mount Pleasant and was a deacon thereof after the death of his father. He was devotedly fond of all outdoor sports and pastimes, spending his vacations in hunting and fishing, and was president of the Mount Pleasant branch of the Wild Life League.
Mr. Barnhart served as secretary of the Local Exemption Board for District No. 6, also as chairman of the Four Minute men for that district.
