NOTABLE DEATH
Jane Pease, star athlete, CSU instructor, coach
Jane Pease set an american record in the hurdles and became the first female coach at Cleveland State University
Pease died March 3 at home in Westlake. The Cleveland native had lived in Westlake for the past 87 of her 90 years, going back to when it was Dover Village.
"Peppery Jane Pease was the bundle of energy who often whirred by on a busy errand," The Plain Dealer's Joe Maxse wrote in 1992, 10 years after she retired.
"Pease always had a whistle around her neck, wore some type of school sweatshirt and walked-ran on a pair of sneakers to keep her on schedule."
She was born Jane Pease, with no middle name.
At Dover High, she was an all-star captain in basketball and soccer. She broke several school records in track. When boys kicked footballs onto the girls' soccer field, she often responded with longer kicks back.
At Lake Erie College, Pease set a collegiate women's record in the 60-yard low hurdles. She taught high school for a year in Crestline. In 1944, she became the first female physical education instructor at Fenn College. Twenty-one years later, Fenn became part of the new Cleveland State University, and Pease stayed on as associate professor of health and physical education.
She played field hockey in regional leagues and national tournaments until her mid-40s. She also officiated many events, drove team buses to events, kept score for men's games and more.
Pease organized the women's varsity basketball team and began to coach it in 1973. She founded and started coaching women's tennis in 1979. After a few years, she gave up coaching and focused on officiating again, feeling more comfortable and skillful at the latter. She also helped lead the university's intramural sports.
She became the first woman in Cleveland State's Athletic Hall of Fame and a member of the Dover Westlake Alumni Association's sports hall of fame. The university named a service award and its endowed scholarship in women's basketball for her. She also won a distinguished faculty award.
At Dover Congregational Church, Pease played hand-bells and served as financial secretary.
Jenkins Funeral Chapel handled her arrangements. Cleveland State held a tribute and a moment of silence on March 5 before a women's basketball game.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
