He was educated in Fort Palmer School, the Indiana State Normal School, where he took a college preparatory course, and at the Westminster United Presbyterian College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. He studied at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and was ordained as a minister of the United Presbyterian church; stationed at Cambridge, Ohio.
