General Notes: Husband - Samuel Ruff
Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA
He was reared on the home farm and received his education in the rural schools of Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Leaving school he engaged in farming, eventually owning the home farm of one hundred and fifty-three acres, a tract of one hundred and forty acres in the immediate vicinity of Hannastown and a one-half interest in one hundred and twenty acres of land which adjoined that village. On the homestead he built a large, fine brick house, in which he resided. In religious belief he was a lutheran and a member and deacon of the church of that denomination.
He was born in Mount Pleasant township, about two miles from Mt. Pleasant, on the Greensburg road. He received his early education in the local public schools of his native region. After completing his education, he remained with his father for a number of years, working on the latter's farm and until the elder man's death. After this event the homestead descended to him and his brothers and they all continued to reside there for about four years longer, when the place was divided into three parts. This was in the year 1850, and the old farm, which had originally contained three hundred acres, was now separated into three tracts, one containing one hundred acres, one one hundred and thirty-seven acres, and the other sixty-three acres, one of which fell into the possession of Mr. Ruff. He continued to operate this very successfully until the year 1865, when he added forty acres to the original place. He continued at intervals to make his farm larger by the purchase of additional acres, and in 1879 bought a large farm of one hundred and fifty-three acres between Greensburg and Jeannette. He continued his successful operations until 1891, and then retired entirely from active life and enjoyed a well-earned leisure. He and the members of his family were all affiliated with the Second Lutheran Church of Greensburg, and he was a deacon and elder of that body. A Republican in politics.
