General Notes: Husband - Anthony Ruff
He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and when very young removed to Westmoreland County. There he received his education from a school teacher of the county, giving in payment therefor a peck of salt. He followed agricultural pursuits all his life, and was one of the most successful and prosperous farmers in the county, owning some twelve hundred acres of land in one tract, which he divided among his children before his death. In politics he was an old line Whig, and very active in party affairs. In church relations he was a Lutheran. His wife was his first cousin.
He was among the early settlers of Mt. Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church, in which he was an active and earnest worker. He was a prominent whig in his section of the county, was regarded as a safe and reliable business man and by honest industry and judicious management he acquired several farms and for his day was one of the wealthiest men in the southern part of the county. He was well advanced in years at the time of his death.
He owned a considerable body of land in Mt. Pleasant township, where he owned and operated a small distillery until his death.
A sister of his was captured by the Indians and was liberated after being kept in captivity forty years.
He was the purchaser of a tract of farm land comprising three hundred and fourteen acres for which he paid the sum of three thousand pounds, considered an enormous amount in those days. He continued to purchase land at various periods of his life, and at his death left an estate of more than twelve hundred acres.
He was a lad of but six years of age when they came to this country. He is described as a man of fine physique and an expert horseman. He became a well developed man both physically and mentally above the ordinary of his time. His advice was sought by his neighbors as his judgments were respected. A student of politics and religion, he helped to establish the Lutheran church which was located on the land originally owned by his father. With his own hands he helped to build the parsonage of logs which was yet standing in the twentieth century. He became one of the first trustees of the church and remained in this position until advanced age when he was succeeded by his son, Daniel.
He died November 9, 1856, at eighty-three years, ten months and seven days. [WON, 538] Which would put his birth at January 2, 1773 - the same source giving his date of birth as July 2 of that year.
He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and came as a child to Westmoreland County with his father. In his new home he followed the occupation of farming, and became a man wealthy and prominent in the neighborhood. Besides his productive farm he was the owner of two large grist mills at Mount Pleasant, about two miles from the borough of that name. He was a member of the Lutheran church and was a staunch Whig in politics.
