He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was subsequently married, and in 1828 they emigrated to America and settled in Union Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. [TCHNCLC, 783]

In 1908 William W. was the only survivor of their seven children.

There appears to be confusion about the early history of this family:
Alexander Pattison, founder of this branch of the Pattison family, first came to Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, soon after the Revolution. He died about 1789, after his brothers had established the family in other sections of the eastern Colonies. Alexander Pattison married a daughter of Alexander Stuart. [PAH, 252]
