General Notes: Husband - Josiah D. Wigle

He was reared and educated in Washington Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. At an early age he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. In 1893 he purchased a farm of eighty-five acres, which he devoted to general farming.
At the outbreak of the civil war he was among the first to take up arms. April 4, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company C, Fourteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, and before receiving his uniform was promoted to the rank of corporal. For valiant service in the field he was soon made first duty sergeant, and his next promotion was to first division forage master, with rank of second lieutenant. During his first term of service he participated in all the battles of the cavalry under General Sheridan. In December, 1864, he was wounded at New Creek, and on June 5, 1865, was honorably discharged and returned to civil life. He was for some time a resident of Franklin township, and during that period held for thirteen years the office of constable. He served his township in other positions also. In politics he was a Republican. He and his family were members of the Lutheran church, in which for a number of years he served as superintendent of the Sunday school.
