After his father's death he was taken to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he received his education in the public schools. In August, 1855, he came to New Bethlehem, Clarion County, and secured a clerkship in the store of C. E. Andrews. A few years later he was received into partnership, under the firm name of Andrews & Marsh. In June, 1880, Mr. Marsh sold his interest to Mr. Andrews, but for the ensuing three years remained in the business as an employee. In 1881 he assisted in organizing the New Bethlehem Water Works Company, and in 1883 he was elected president, an office which he retained one year. He was later secretary and in 1905 became treasurer of the company. About the time of the organization of this institution, Mr. Marsh embarked in the dry goods and shoe business, becoming the proprietor of an establishment which he conducted for thirteen years.
Politically Mr. Marsh was a Republican, and took an active part in borough affairs, filling the offices of burgess and school director, in addition to serving many years on the election board. He was the first notary public in New Bethlehem. He was senior master of the Masonic order in his home town, having been appointed at the organization of the lodge and thereafter continuously filling offices. For twenty-five years he was treasurer. He belonged to the I. O. O. F., and was affiliated with the Knights of Pythias beginning at the organization of the order, about 1878, and held the office of secretary. He was a member of the Baptist church.
