General Notes: Husband - George Washington Porter

He grew up in Mercer, Pennsylvania, where he followed clerking, and subsequently clerked in Pittsburgh. In the spring of 1850 he went to Cali­fornia and spent one year in the gold mines, returning to Sharon in August, 1851. He clerked in that borough for several years; in 1864 went into busi­ness with his father and brother William, and was engaged in the mercantile trade for many years in Sharon. In 1875 he was elected book-keeper of the First National Bank of Sharon, and was soon afterward chosen assistant cashier, which position he filled up to his death. Politically he was a stanch Republican, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. [HMC 1888, 749]
