General Notes: Husband - George Washington Porter
He grew up in Mercer, Pennsylvania, where he followed clerking, and subsequently clerked in Pittsburgh. In the spring of 1850 he went to California and spent one year in the gold mines, returning to Sharon in August, 1851. He clerked in that borough for several years; in 1864 went into business with his father and brother William, and was engaged in the mercantile trade for many years in Sharon. In 1875 he was elected book-keeper of the First National Bank of Sharon, and was soon afterward chosen assistant cashier, which position he filled up to his death. Politically he was a stanch Republican, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. [HMC 1888, 749]
