Shortly after they married, he and his wife moved to the Mayville, New York, area where he went to work in the oil fields, probably as a lease hand or pumper. About 1885, they moved back to Rockland township to a farm they inherited from Sarah's father. They lived on this seventy-seven acres of land the rest of their lives. Besides farming, he continued to work in the oil fields in Rockland as a pumper. [DKM, 54]
