He was graduated at Jefferson College in 1857, and was admitted to the Franklin County Bar April 14, 1859. He was graduated at the Western Theological Seminary in 1863, and became a Presbyterian minister, serving congregations in Allegheny, Philadelphia and Peoria, Illinois.
