He was educated at the Chambersburg Academy, and was graduated from Lafayette College in 1898. He studied law with Sharpe & Sharpe at Chambersburg, and was admitted to the Franklin County Bar, in April, 1900, and began the practice of his profession in Greencastle. He was also one of the editors and owners of the Echo-Pilot, the leading newspaper of Greencastle, which he purchased in 1901. He was an active Republican worker of the county.
