He remained on the old family homestead in Menallen township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, until his son, Alfred, was several years old, when he sold the farm and purchased a plantation near Wellsburg, West Virginia, whereon he lived until his death.

He and his wife had four sons and four daughters. The daughters all married and died in middle life.
