General Notes: Husband - Commodore Richard O’Brien
He gained fame in the Revolutionary War.
He was captured by the Turks in 1785, and held in the service of the dey of Algiers for seven years. He was the father of eight children, four of whom were born while he and wife were captives, Mrs. Holmes being one of the number. He was the first United States consul to Barbary. In 1810 he settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and was a member of the legislature from that place.
