General Notes: Husband - John F. Whitworth
He was born at Apollo, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he received his early education in the common schools. He also studied under private teachers, and took his professional course at the law department of the University of Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the Armstrong County bar in 1878 and began practice ever since, having long made a specialty of corporation law, in which branch he was a recognized authority. He wrote several works on corporation law which had a wide circulation and a number of semi-legal works on the Bible. Until 1901 Mr. Whitworth practiced at Kittanning, where he acquired a wide patronage, and then he was engaged at Harrisburg, having in that year accepted the position of corporation deputy secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He continued to maintain his home, however, at Kittanning, his residence being at No. 403 North McKean street, where he spent his weekends with his family. Mr. Whitworth was always a stanch Republican and active in the work of the party, and before entering into his work at Harrisburg served as county chairman. [HAC 1914, 427]
He was born in Apollo, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he attended the public schools, and he afterwards took an uncompleted course at the University of Pennsylvania. Reading law in the office of J. A.
Freedly, and making his study particularly thorough in the department of corporation law, Mr. Whitworth was admitted to the bar in September, 1878, and in that year began general practice under his own name at Apollo. In 1901, Mr. Whitworth went to Harrisburg, where he entered upon his long association with the legal department of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, continuing therewith for twenty-two years, when he returned again to general practice. It was during that period that Mr. Whitworth first established his repute as a writer on corporation law, a repute that is now broadcast in all law colleges, his works in his specialty being "Taxation of Corporations," "Statutory Law of Corporations," and "Creation of Corporations." He is also author of several works not directly pertaining to law, and it may be stated that during his service at Harrisburg, seven governors sucessfully held office. In recognition of his works that have established his fame as a law writer, he was elected a member of the Society of Arts and Sciences of New York City.
In political matters, Mr. Whitworth gave his allegiance to the Republican Party; and fraternally he was affiliated with Apollo Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, and was a life member of the Pittsburgh Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Armstrong County Historical Society; and his religious faith was that of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
