He was born on the family homestead, received his education in the common schools, and was a skillful tiller of the soil. He and his brother, William A. Nicolls, owned and lived on the farm which was taken up by their grandfather in the very early 1800s, and always remained in the name of Nicolls, and was known as the prettiest farm in Unity township. They erected a large and modern barn in 1870, and 1884 they purchased the old William Sanford farm in Derry township, consisting of one hundred and fifty acres.
