General Notes: Husband - John A. Barnes

---

He was born in Mercer township, Butler County, PA, was reared on the family home­stead, and received a common school education. After he grew to maturity, he and his father purchased the old Barnes homestead, on a portion of which he erected improvements, and engaged in farming thereon after the fall of 1852. He was an elder in Bethel United Presbyterian church, which office he has held beginning in 1876. Politically, he was a Democrat, filled the office of school director for twenty-one years, and also held other township offices.
