General Notes: Husband - J. Covode Reed
He was educated in the common schools of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Fairfield academy, Philadelphia public schools and Chambersburg academy. Leaving school, he became a storekeeper and railroad agent at Lockport, where he served until 1884. In that year he assumed charge of the county's treasurer's office for his father and conducted it during the entire term. His unswerving republicanism, his correct business methods and ability to organize and manage large or extended business interests led to his selection as chairman of the republican county committee of Westmoreland County.
He was born in the city of Philadelphia, and there spent the first three or four years of his life. He was then brought by his parents to Lockport, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and it was here that he became a pupil in the local school. After studying for a time in these institutions, he was sent to the Fairfield Academy at Fairfield and still later to the Academy at Chambersburg. He completed his studies at the last named institution when sixteen years of age, and at once returned to his father's home and began his business career as a clerk in the latter's mercantile establishment. He continued to work there until the year 1884, when he came to Greensburg and secured a position as deputy in the office of the county treasurer under his father, who was that time occupied in this post. He worked there for four years, and was then elected burgess of Greensburg. He had already begun to take an active part in politics and the previous year had been chairman of the Republican county committee. It was about the same time that Mr. Reed first became engaged in the lumber business there, and was associated for some time with C. H. Fogg & Company. This association continued for some ten years, and at the end of that time Mr. Reed purchased his partner's interest and continued the business by himself and under his own name. He was exceedingly successful and became one of the large dealers in this commodity in the region.
He was a prominent Mason in Greensburg and was affiliated with Philanthrophy Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Urania Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Olivet Council, Royal and Select Masters; and Kedron Commandery, Knights Templar.
