Germany was the original home of the race of the Schalls. The period of their emigration is unknown, the first ancestor of whom we have any knowledge being a farmer and miller of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, where he died. One of the sons of this ancestor was John M. Schall.

In 1788 he came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, settling in Derry township.
