He was born in Berkeley County, Virginia. [HWC 1882, 651]
When but three years of age he came with his parents to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he received a subscription-school education in Allen township. When a young man he married and they settled on a farm in Allen township.
He voted first with the Whig, afterward with the Republican party, and served as supervisor of the township. He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church.
