He and his wife moved from Scotland, their native land, during the religious persecutions there, and took refuge in county Donegal, Ireland (then the home of many persecuted Scots), to evade those opposed to their religious belief. This was their home until about 1719 when they and their children, together with their families emigrated to Pennsylvania.
