General Notes: Husband - Josiah R. Read
He spent the days of his boyhood and youth on his father's farm, and was educated in the schools of the neighborhood. In 1840 he began farming on his own account on a sixty-acre tract of timber land, where he built a log cabin. This cabin stood for many years and formed a part of the later residence, but it was boarded and otherwise improved.
He and his wife began their domestic life on the farm, and he came to own a valuable property of 187 acres, the greater part of which was under a high state of cultivation.
In politics, he was a Democrat. He served as constable, was deputy sheriff one year, and in 1855 was elected sheriff, serving for three years.
They had nine children, seven of whom were living in 1898.
