He was self-educated. In 1845, he commenced the work of a minister at the Mahoning Baptist Church, with which he was connected for eight and a half years. He was also pastor of the following churches: Bethesda, for two years; Shiloh, four years; Mechanicsburg, two years; West Lebanon, two years; Pine Creek, one and a fourth years; and Franklin, two years. On account of ill health, he abandoned active work for a few years, only to return to Mahoning, from which, after a career of twenty-one months, he was again forced to retire.
