He was probably born in America, but it is just possible that he was born in Ireland, and was an infant when his parents emigrated. He was among the early residents of Robinson township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and the owner of a fine farm there. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, although in earlier life he had been a Covenanter.
