He was born on the homestead farm in Muddy Creek township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, attended the public schools of his district, and grew to manhood in his native township. He resided on the old homestead, engaged in farming. He was a member of the Presby­terian church of Portersville, and in politics, was a Republican.
