He accompanied his parents to Cherry Valley in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1810, and was reared and educated in Mt. Pleasant Township. He married and settled on the old home farm.
He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church at Candor, in which he was also a ruling elder for many years.
