General Notes: Husband - Matthew McDowell
He came to America not long after the Revolution, and settled on the tract known as "Black Walnut Bottom," on Black-leg creek, [Indiana County, Pennsylvania?] a tract containing about four hundred acres, net measure, upon which there was not one acre untillable. A patent for this tract was applied for by George Armstrong April 3, 1769, and was deeded to Samuel Dickson July 15, 1771. Dickson settled the tract soon after, but date not positively known.
Supposedly he was a brother of Alexander McDowell, the noted surveyor of Venango county. Information about Alexander's siblings makes no mention of a brother Matthew.
Not long after the Revolutionary war, the family migrated to what is now Conemaugh township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, having for a time after their removal from Ireland, resided in Franklin County.
